Established in 1903 as a Salvation Army Fresh Air Camp, its mission was to provide a pleasant retreat for low-income mothers and their children. In 1924, the camp was officially opened and was greatly improved in 1934 with the help of a donation from American Humorist, Actor, and Philanthropist, Will Rogers. In 1967, a major rebuilding project was undertaken and the name was changed to Wonderland Camp & Conference Center in 1983. Since then, the camp has continued to expand, with the construction of the Wonderland Chapel, The Wonderland Lodge, The Sharp Activity Center, a state of the art dining hall, and the transformation of Sandpiper into a hotel facility between 1995 and 2005. Wager, his wife Joyce, and his faithful secretary Roberta Berggren, were all loathe to leave these ministries behind. However, God had other plans. In November 1967, Rich found a camp for sale in an abandoned girls' camp, located on a nice lake and just minutes away from the raging white water activities of the Wolf River. Nestled in the Nicolet National Forest, it had lake and river access and was perfect for future horse and ski trails. With faith and grace, Rich borrowed the down payment and the Silver Birch Ranch was born.
