Hunting Island, or Long Island as it is also known, is a place steeped in history and legend. It is thought to be at least 25,000 years old, originally inhabited by the indigenous Seewee Indians. The Seewees are said to have welcomed the first English settlers to the area by swimming to the ships and carrying them to shore. This impressive welcome was so inspiring that some of the Seewees reportedly even attempted to paddle to England in their canoes, although all were sadly lost in storms at sea. The only other inhabitants rumored to have lived on the island were the pirates, who reportedly buried their treasures in the deserted dunes and woods.
