In 1938, The Footlight Players took the first steps toward transforming the old cotton warehouse into a fully functioning theatre. The Players undertook a massive fundraising campaign, raising enough money to begin construction. This campaign continued for the next several years and was finally completed in 1941. Since then, the Footlight Players have been able to offer a wide variety of theatrical performances in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere. The Footlight Players first came to the public's attention in 1931, when Lt. Commander Charles Russell Price directed a successful series of one-act plays at the Charleston Navy Yard. This enthusiastic reception led the Players to formally organize and incorporate in the fall of 1932. In 1934, Mrs. Eliza Huger Dunkin Kammerer gifted The Footlight Players an old cotton warehouse for the purpose of transforming it into a finished playhouse. For the next four years, all productions were performed in a variety of theaters around the Holy City, including the Academy of Music, the Victory Theatre, Hampton Park, The Citadel, and the Dock Street Theatre. In 1938, The Footlight Players began a major fundraising campaign to convert the old cotton warehouse into a fully functioning theatre. After several years of hard work, the campaign was completed in 1941. The Footlight Players now offer a variety of theatrical performances in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere.

They wanted to give people a place to have fun, make friends, and create something beautiful. After a lot of hard work, they were able to make that vision become a reality. They opened the doors to the new studio and it was quickly filled with laughter and love and art. Everyone who visited the studio loved it and it quickly became the place to be for all the art lovers in the area. The couple had managed to take a dream and make it real.
