Programs at Masters Studios of Self Defense - James Island in Charleston, SC

Kung Fu
In the Masters Studios Kung Fu program, students first learn fundamentals such as line kicks, stances, and stretching techniques. Then the students learn standardized Kung Fu forms such as Long Fist (Chang Chuan) and Southern Fist (Nan Chuan). In learning these forms the students focus on proper hand and arm position, stances, posture, where to look, and understanding the fighting strategy of the form.
Weapon training begins next. Weapon fundamentals are learned first, followed by the weapon routine. Some of the routines taught are staff, broadsword, straight sword, spear, three-section staff, double broadsword, Guan Dao, and more. After a short time, the students will see improvement in their flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance.

Tai Chi
In Masters Studios Tai Chi class the students start with warm-ups and stretching followed by fundamental exercises such as the Tai Chi walk. The students then begin to learn the first form, which is the 24 Movement Yang Style set. This is a standardized form, which takes about 4 – 6 months to learn. It is characterized by slow, low impact movements. As the form is memorized, the students are refining their techniques adhering to the principles of Tai Chi Chuan.
