In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson and the Office of Economic Opportunity established the Lawrence Community Action Council to help fight poverty in the Greater Lawrence area. This council was renamed the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc. in 1966 and became a platform for initiatives to improve the quality of life in the local community. The mission of the GLCAC is to provide education, social services, child care, health care, housing, youth employment, and other related services to those in need. With the help of government and private organizations, the GLCAC has been successful in creating opportunities for those living in poverty.

The program also includes Junior Achievement® and SPARK curriculums, which help kids to build the skills they need to succeed in a global economy and develop lifelong healthy behaviors. Field trips and special events are also part of the program. With the support of Lawrence and Methuen Public Schools, activities are designed to reflect Massachusetts learning standards and extend learning beyond the school day. Community Kids Place provides a great learning opportunity for students of all ages and offers an enriching and enjoyable experience.
