Greater Lawrence Community Action Council
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson and the Office of Economic Opportunity established the Lawrence Community Action Council to help fight poverty in the Greater Lawrence area. This council was renamed the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc. in 1966 and became a platform for initiatives to improve the quality of life in the local community. The mission of the GLCAC is to provide education, social services, child care, health care, housing, youth employment, and other related services to those in need. With the help of government and private organizations, the GLCAC has been successful in creating opportunities for those living in poverty.


YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts
For more than a century, the YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts has been providing vital services to women and their families in the Merrimack Valley, Essex County, and Southern NH. Founded in 1892, the YWCA was originally created to provide safe housing, job training and support to women who had moved from rural communities and overseas to work in area mills and shops. Today, the YWCA is a thriving social change agency that serves over 15,000 women, children and families every year, offering a range of services from housing, education, and employment support to health and wellness programs.
