Abe and Gertrude Krasker's dream of owning a summer camp came true in 1924 when they opened Indian Acres Camp for Boys in Fryeburg, ME. The couple had fallen in love with a property they purchased from Abe's student at Essex College. Two years later, they opened Forest Acres Camp for Girls two miles down the road. When Abe passed away in 1962, his son Richard took over the management of both camps, with his mother teaching him the ropes of camp ownership. He and his wife Sandy fully took over in 1969. In 1998, the camps were purchased by Lisa and Geoff Newman who were determined to keep the tradition the Kraskers had established alive. Between 2005 and 2010, Neal and Julie Waldman co-directed camp with Lisa and Geoff. Now, almost 100 years after its founding, Indian and Forest Acres thrive under the Newman’s leadership with tradition at the heart of what makes the camp so special.

At Nichols Day Camp, we provide our peninsula area youth with an abundance of outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. Our 501(c)(3) non-profit, originally incorporated in 1963, is part of the Blue Hill Society for Aid to Children and our mission is to inspire a lifelong love for nature in our youth. Dr. George Alexander Kohut, a literary scholar and educator with a vision to provide a healthy and character-building outdoor experience, founded Kamp Kohut in 1907. Coming from the heat and pollution of the city, he ran a boys' school in New York, hence calling it "Kohut's School for Boys". Located in Casco Bay on Peaks Island, this camp is accessible by the Casco Bay Lines ferry in Portland. Children ages 3 and up can take a morning boat ride to the island and spend the day engaging in horseback riding, kayaking, swimming, fort exploration, games, and crafts. Every day, campers and staff vote on daily activities, and each camper's input is valued. Bill and Sheila Hacker, along with Henry Hacker and Henry Lesser, opened the original camp in 1954 with just 37 kids. Over the years, they built up the camp facilities with a true labor of love. Now, Camp Cedar is a thriving camp with 270 boys ages 8-15 enjoying the summer together. Camp Cedar is the perfect size, offering all the options of a larger camp while still being able to individualize each camper’s experience. Taking a walk to the campfire, visitors can witness the values of camp and community that have been proudly upheld since the camp’s inception. The dedication of Bill and Sheila Hacker, Henry Hacker, and Henry Lesser has created a lasting legacy that continues to enrich the lives of campers each summer.

Our campers come from inner-city and rural areas and are aged 7 to 18. We give them the opportunity to take part in educational, challenging and fun activities, as well as to learn from positive role models. Our campers are also given the chance to build their skills for life in a place where everyone is celebrated for their diversity. We are a nonprofit and rely on the generosity of donors to provide full camperships each summer. Summer Camp is more than just a place to have fun!
