Once upon a time, in the sunny state of South Carolina, sat on the southern coast of the United States, where palmettos sway in the sea breeze and the smell of magnolia blossoms fills the air, there was a tribe of kids unlike any other. They were the Drama Kings and Queens of SC, thespians of the first order, and they were as varied and colorful as a bag of skittles! You see, South Carolina isn't just about sweet tea, juicy peaches, and basketball. It's also a place where imagination runs wild, and dreams come to life on the stage. It's a place where kids don a suit of armor to battle dragons, fly on magic carpets, or transform into superheroes saving the world, all before lunchtime! Meet our friend, Snortlepop McFizzlepants. Yes, you read that right! He’s the friendliest three-headed alien you'll ever meet, and he's the wackiest, wildest, most whizz-bangingly enthusiastic drama coach this side of the Mississippi. Snortlepop, with his six eyes, and three mouths, helps these talented youngsters to channel their excitement and boundless energy into amazing performances. Now, let's not forget, these SC kids are as unique as Snortlepop himself! There's Billy, who can mimic any accent from French to Martian, and Susie, who can cry on cue when she loses her imaginary pet dragon. Then there's little Timmy, who might be shy off-stage, but becomes a roaring lion when the spotlight hits him. Together, they form the spectacular troupe, 'The Palmetto Players,' known far and wide for their tremendous talent and theatrical thrills. So, if you ever find yourself in the charming state of South Carolina, be sure to check them out. You may even meet our dear Snortlepop McFizzlepants, just don't forget to bring him his favorite snack - buttered popcorn jelly beans!

In 1956, Nield Gordon and Everette Pigg, former roommates and basketball teammates at Furman University, had a vision to open their own boys’ camp. They found the perfect spot in the Blue Ridge foothills of Mountain Rest, SC: 60 acres of farm land surrounded by the Sumter National Forest. They purchased the property and named it Camp Chatuga, after the nearby Chattooga River and Chattooga Ridge. The farmhouse on the property became the camp dining hall, and, to this day, is the only original building still standing. The cornfield became the lake, and the old apple orchard became the tennis and basketball courts. The camp also pays homage to the Cherokee Indians with the name, which is adapted from the Creek word “Tsa-tu-ge”, meaning “we crossed here.” Camp Chatuga has been around for over 60 years, and continues to be a place of inspiration and learning for young boys. Through the vision of two former college roommates, Camp Chatuga remain a place of growth, fun, and friendship for children today.

Hunting Island, or Long Island as it is also known, is a place steeped in history and legend. It is thought to be at least 25,000 years old, originally inhabited by the indigenous Seewee Indians. The Seewees are said to have welcomed the first English settlers to the area by swimming to the ships and carrying them to shore. This impressive welcome was so inspiring that some of the Seewees reportedly even attempted to paddle to England in their canoes, although all were sadly lost in storms at sea. The only other inhabitants rumored to have lived on the island were the pirates, who reportedly buried their treasures in the deserted dunes and woods. Unfortunately, none of these treasured have been found as of yet.

It also provides entertainment to those who appreciate these art forms but do not wish to be actively involved in them. Young performers have the chance to work with experienced veterans, many of whom are working professionals who volunteer their time. Many of the Society’s current and former performers have gone on to appear in Broadway shows, network television and major feature films. The Society is a great way for people to gain an appreciation for the performing arts while providing a platform for those looking to refine their talent. Fort Mill, South Carolina, has a thriving theater scene thanks to the efforts of Robert Reid and Steve McCrae. It all started on a vacation when Reid was inspired to bring the theater to his hometown. With the help of McCrae and others, the first production, Spring for Sure, was performed under a circus tent in 1980 at the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex. The community response was overwhelmingly positive, leading to the formation of the Fort Mill Community Playhouse as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality entertainment to sponsors, patrons, and members. The subsequent years saw Carnival and other musicals like The Music Man performed at A. O. Jones School Auditorium. The Playhouse continued to put on popular shows like Where’s Charley?, Carousel, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The Fort Mill Community Playhouse continues to be a source of entertainment and joy in the community, thanks to the vision of Robert Reid and Steve McCrae.

In 1938, The Footlight Players took the first steps toward transforming the old cotton warehouse into a fully functioning theatre. The Players undertook a massive fundraising campaign, raising enough money to begin construction. This campaign continued for the next several years and was finally completed in 1941. Since then, the Footlight Players have been able to offer a wide variety of theatrical performances in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere. The Footlight Players first came to the public's attention in 1931, when Lt. Commander Charles Russell Price directed a successful series of one-act plays at the Charleston Navy Yard. This enthusiastic reception led the Players to formally organize and incorporate in the fall of 1932. In 1934, Mrs. Eliza Huger Dunkin Kammerer gifted The Footlight Players an old cotton warehouse for the purpose of transforming it into a finished playhouse. For the next four years, all productions were performed in a variety of theaters around the Holy City, including the Academy of Music, the Victory Theatre, Hampton Park, The Citadel, and the Dock Street Theatre. In 1938, The Footlight Players began a major fundraising campaign to convert the old cotton warehouse into a fully functioning theatre. After several years of hard work, the campaign was completed in 1941. The Footlight Players now offer a variety of theatrical performances in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere.

Rehearsals are typically held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, although this can vary. The classes are designed to help students reach their potential, by teaching them to focus, take direction, respect their peers and improve their memorization and reading skills. In addition, the classes help to build confidence in their own abilities, both on and off the stage. Ultimately, our goal is for the students to learn how to work together as a team and tell their story with confidence.
