Tai Chi is an ancient discipline that is meant to balance and strengthen the body so it can move in a natural and harmonious manner. Many of the issues that people suffer from are the direct result of imbalances of the body and mind. Many of the conveniences of modern life have left our bodies out of balance and our minds preoccupied and stressed. Tai Chi can seem confusing and intimidating, and although all Tai Chi is based on the same philosophy and principles, not all Tai Chi is the same. I have looked at the most common problems associated with Tai Chi practice such as confusing terminology, abstract ideas, vague descriptions and understanding the difference between what is real and what is perceived. I break down and explain the movements using modern exercise science and explanations of anatomy to translate these complexities into a more understandable model. By recognizing the imbalances and deficits in our posture, we can improve every physical activity we perform and drastically improve quality of life. This philosophical approach also provides a model for building greater harmony in all aspects of our lives and results in generally staying more calm and less stressed. Not everyone can grasp and apply these concepts, but to those who can, it is a extremely rewarding experience on many levels.
