Our story introduces a cast of cute, funny, and remarkably adventurous kiddos, who are fondly referred to as the ‘Nature Navigators’. Now, the Nature Navigators are not your average children. They swap video game controllers for magnifying glasses and favorite TV shows for real-life bird watching. You'll find them trudging through the ancient Appalachian trails, their sneakers splattered with mud, and laughter echoing through the trees. They dive into the waters of the Atlantic, swimming alongside the seahorses and occasionally engaging in a friendly race with a speedy blue crab. Our leader is a character as distinctive as Massachusetts itself; a rambunctious raccoon named Rocky. Themed weekly sessions have campers exploring trails, discovering vernal pools, catching frogs, building forts, and venturing to new places. Small group sizes ensure that our counselors can develop a relationship with each child, creating a caring, supportive environment. At Oak Knoll Summer Camp, we believe it’s important that children learn and grow through their interactions with nature as well as with each other. We provide opportunities for structured free play, during which campers of various ages and developmental stages interact, learn important social skills, and gain appreciation for nature. We also believe in connecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities with nature to enhance quality of life and to spark an interest in preserving nature for future generations.
Situated in southeastern Massachusetts, SMARTS – the Southeastern Massachusetts Arts and Humanities Consortium – has been providing arts and humanities programs to over 7,000 area youth since its inception in 2005. With a mission to promote creative skills in students, SMARTS offers a range of visual and performing arts programs that provide both youth and community members with the opportunity to express their creativity. Not only does SMARTS offer a wide selection of creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, music, and visual arts programs, but the organization also provides professional development for teachers in the two member districts (Attleboro and Mansfield) supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. This enables teachers to learn new strategies to bring the arts into their classrooms, allowing them to foster creativity in their students.
