Skokie's Emily Oaks Nature Center and Preserve is the perfect place for families to explore the great outdoors! This 13-acre nature sanctuary is packed with native wildflowers, grasses, oaks, a two-acre pond, and trails. It's also home to a variety of urban wildlife, like Great Blue Herons, Coyotes, Flying Squirrels, Northern Water Snakes, Red Foxes and Cooper's Hawks. The center itself also features the Woodland Wander Inn, a fun interactive experience for kids. As if that wasn't enough, the center also offers classes and meeting rooms, plus special programs that help scouts earn badges. If you're interested, be sure to make reservations as soon as possible. With so much to explore, Emily Oaks Nature Center and Preserve is the perfect place for families to learn, grow, and make memories.

At the Heller Nature Center, you can explore 97 acres of natural beauty, including oak-hickory forests, tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and wetlands. There are three miles of trails, perfect for those who would like a peaceful escape. If you’re looking for a more exciting experience, the Heller staff plans seasonal nature excursions, educational programs, canoe trips, and nature lectures. Summer camps include rock climbing and white-water rafting. In August, you can participate in harvesting the 500+ pounds of honey from the Heller bees. The Nature Center is also a great place for families. Wander Woods is a playground designed for kids, and the StoryTrail is a fun self-guided adventure. There is also a team course for groups. The trails are wheelchair accessible, with a crushed stone surface on the red, green, and blue trails and a woodchip surface on the yellow trail. Pack a picnic and enjoy the day!

In 2010, Dan and Andy bought and invested $1 million in construction and renovation of Camp Manitowa Rend Lake. Since then, the 40-acre property has been hosting sleep-away summer camps, retreats, and festivals. It is the newest, freshest camp in the Benton area of Southern Illinois, and is located only 90 minutes from St. Louis, MO and Paducah, KY. At Camp Manitowa, campers entering grades 2nd through 8th can benefit from a tailored 1 or 2 week residential camp program. This program is designed with younger campers’ needs in mind, and encourages the development of independence, self-esteem, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Campers also have the opportunity to make lifelong friends in a small, nurturing community. Mac McCarty, Director of the McKinney Camp and employed by the School, proposed the idea of the School having its own day camp.
