Unlike many modernized martial art systems in America, the Moo Duk Kwan® organization was founded in Yang Son Ku South, Korea in 1945. Moo Duk Kwan® certified instructors and schools teach the traditional Korean Soo Bahk Do® martial art system as interpreted by the Founder Hwang Kee. His proprietary martial art system is a composite of movements and self-defense techniques and strategies that draws heavily on the ancient documented Korean martial art of “Soo Bahk” or “Soo Bahk Hi” as interpreted by Hwang Kee plus northern and southern Chinese influences. The resulting system has linear, hard movements plus softer, circular flowing movements and techniques, so it has something that practitioners of every age and every level of physical ability can enjoy and benefit from. Soo Bahk Do® can empower a student to very effectively protect themselves from bullying and other violent behavior by aggressors, so every student is also taught values, etiquette and philosophy to balance the powerful new self-defense skills they are learning. FIMA is one of the premier martial arts schools in the Bergen County area. In June of 2018 The Hamilton Academy officially took new ownership under Rae Lynn Sypher. Ms. Sypher began training in 1999 and was promoted to Instructor Trainee at the age of 12. Ms. Sypher has competed nationally in New York, California, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana & Florida. Competing in Black Belt divisions from 2008-2017, Ms. Sypher is nationally undefeated.

Tiger Kim's Taekwondo Center currently teaches over 1,000 active students in the Triborough area. Ko's Tae Kwon Do was established by Grand Master David Jae Boong Ko in September of 1992. The first school was located at 313 Route 46 East in Parsippany, New Jersey. In September of 2003, Master Ko opened the doors to his Livingston school. We see this in every class when students and Instructors bow to each other in the start and end of every lesson. When we bow, we look up at the person and make eye contact. Sensory Tae-Kwon-Do is a unique Therapeutic Martial Arts program for children on the spectrum, or with behavioral and/or learning disabilities. It is a breakthrough doctor supervised martial arts program custom-designed around each child's neurological requirements and needs. The core of this program is extracted from cutting-edge neurological studies that incorporate movement exercise to help create healthier pathways in the brain. Therapeutic mind-body activities stimulate the brain improving balance, muscle strength, coordination, self-awareness, executive functions, and working memory. We call this the bottom-up foundation approach and has proven far more successful in accelerating development. We've discovered that our technique also benefits siblings and neurotypical children.

Parents, have you ever considered enrolling your child in an advanced martial art? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed decades ago by the Gracie family and is renowned for its ground techniques, which can give a smaller person the power to overcome a bigger, more powerful opponent. Kids will learn balance, leverage, technique, timing and thinking, and the traditional Gi is worn for both takedowns, mat control, submissions, escapes, sweeps, and conditioning. Joint locks, compression locks, and chokes are all part of the training, and No-Gi grappling is also available. As an exercise, Tae Kwon Do strengthens and stretches almost every muscle of the body. Beginners start slowly with a thorough stretching warm-up and a gradual increase in the intensity of exercise. On the advanced level, each practice inherently has an aerobic effect. We teach age-appropriate self-defense techniques while providing a traditional and respectful martial arts program. Tae Kwon Do classes begin with a series of traditional movements known as basic form. By teaching focus of mind and sharpness of body movement, this warm-up prepares the student for the class’ workout. Class continues with an emphasis on the unique style of kicking for which Tae Kwon Do is known. All classes are at least one-hour long, increasing to 90 minutes for the advanced adult/teen levels.

Taekwondo is a uniquely Korean martial art, and is the most-practiced martial art in the world, with an estimated 70 million people in over 150 countries now practicing Taekwondo. As with other martial arts, there are many styles of Taekwondo; the style practiced by Master Moon SMA is principally World Taekwondo style (the same style that is competed in the Olympics) with older, more traditional elements incorporated into our school curriculum as well. When our students achieve Black Belt, they are awarded “dan certificates” from Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters, located in Seoul, South Korea. Not all Taekwondo schools in the world are qualified to issue these kinds of certificates, but our location is qualified to award these highly-coveted credentials. These credentials ensure that your child’s Black Belt is recognized at any Olympic-style Taekwondo school, anywhere in the world! Years from now, when your child goes off to college or relocates to a new job, they will be able to continue practicing Taekwondo at any Kukkiwon-affiliated school in the world, safe in the knowledge that their years of training at Master Moon SMA will still be recognized by their new school.
