At the Heller Nature Center, you can explore 97 acres of natural beauty, including oak-hickory forests, tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and wetlands. There are three miles of trails, perfect for those who would like a peaceful escape. If you’re looking for a more exciting experience, the Heller staff plans seasonal nature excursions, educational programs, canoe trips, and nature lectures. Summer camps include rock climbing and white-water rafting. In August, you can participate in harvesting the 500+ pounds of honey from the Heller bees. The Nature Center is also a great place for families. Wander Woods is a playground designed for kids, and the StoryTrail is a fun self-guided adventure. There is also a team course for groups. The trails are wheelchair accessible, with a crushed stone surface on the red, green, and blue trails and a woodchip surface on the yellow trail. Pack a picnic and enjoy the day!

The Ribbons of Resilience, Trust, and Strategy are designed to build and reinforce the lifelong skills that our military kids will need to meet future challenges. We could not be more proud of our military kids and the work they do to earn these Ribbons. Kids Rank Pride was founded in 2011 with the goal of supporting the social and emotional growth of military children through structured skill-building activities and providing recognition for their achievements. We are so proud of our military kids and the work they put in to earn the Ribbons of Resilience, Trust, and Strategy through Kids Rank Pride. These Ribbons are designed to help build and reinforce the lifelong skills that our military kids will need to meet future challenges. Kids Rank Pride was founded in 2011 with the mission of supporting the social and emotional growth of military children through structured skill-building activities and recognizing their achievements. Our Pride members work hard every week to build Youth Leadership through Pride Officer Positions, give back to their communities through Volunteer Service Projects, and connect to other military kids through games and activities.

With 44 parks, beaches, and 11 sports and nature facilities spread over 700 acres of land, the Park District is a valuable part of the community. Property taxes are the main source of funding for the Park District, making up around 50% of its operating costs. However, only 6% of resident property taxes are paid directly to the Park District. This is why the Park District needs to look for other sources of funding to ensure the continued success of its facilities. The Park District is committed to finding new sources of funding to keep its parks and nature facilities running at the highest level. Community support is essential to maintaining these invaluable resources and to ensure that generations to come can enjoy them.
