About Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai, AK
The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is part of an international network of more than 40 Challenger Learning Centers spearheaded by Challenger Center. Founded in 1986, Challenger Center was created to honor the crew of shuttle flight STS-51L and its mission to provide students with a hands-on, space-themed learning experience that encourages exploration and discovery of STEM subjects. Our center strives to make these opportunities accessible to hundreds of thousands of students and tens of thousands of teachers each year.
At the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska, we are proud to be part of the global network envisioned by Challenger Center. Our goal is to inspire students of all ages to pursue STEM-related careers that will shape the future of our world. Our simulated learning environment engages students in dynamic, hands-on opportunities to strengthen knowledge in STEM subjects, while honouring the legacy of the heroic crew of shuttle flight STS-51L.

BeAKid
Robotics
Geared toward 3rd-6th grade
Students will learn the history of robotics along with how they’re being used in the present day. There is a discussion of the different industries that use robots and how they will be used in the future. Students will also design and test their own robots to perform a series of tasks.

Astronomy
Astronomy Alaska State, NGSS, and Common Core Standards Alignment
Geared toward K-8th grade
Students will explore the Milky Way and its constellations, as well as a brief history of Roman and Greek mythology pertaining to these constellations. Your students will explore both the diversity and vastness of the cosmos in this workshop; from topics of “close proximity” such as the Aurora Borealis and celestial bodies of our Solar System, to stars and galaxies that are thousands to billions of light-years away. The Astronomy workshop includes an informative presentation, and a team-based team-teaching student activity. For another hour you can add an optional StarLab planetarium presentation.

NanoTechnology in Space
Geared toward 5th graders and up
During this workshop, your students will learn what the big deal is about nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is technology at the nano-scale – one BILLIONTH of a meter! This field of science is exploding with new opportunities and applications in nearly every field of science. Through hands-on exploration, students learn about size and scale, risks and benefits of technology, forms of carbon, and changing chemical and physical properties.
