At Camp Olmsted, our goal is to give children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to experience the joys of outdoor camping. This mission dates back to the early 1900’s and has been extended to include immigrant families too.
In the 1960’s, the United Methodist City Society opened the United Methodist Camp Service, which allowed children and families from low-income neighborhoods in NYC to attend camp and offered support throughout the summer camp registration process.
More recently, in 1997, the United Methodist City Society took ownership of Camp Olmsted and, along with registration for Camp Olmsted, children were given the chance to register for the Fresh Air Fund. This service has enabled countless underserved communities to experience the magic of camping.
During our programs campers are able to enjoy a variety of fun and engaging activities such as swimming, sports, hiking, art, performances and ropes challenge course activities. These activities are designed to build campers self-esteem and enhance their social skills. Our program and facilities are accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the Department of Health.
