Sanctuary

In 1961 the mayor and council- concerned that unwise development might erode the future quality of life in the borough- established a committee to study the prospects for a nature center.

A public association was incorporated in 1962, to which 80 acres of land was leased from the Borough. Since that time more land has been added, some with the assistance of State and local Green Acres programs.

A building for meetings and classes was erected in 1967. In 1985, The Nature Center lease was amended to place additional acres under Nature Center management and to extend the lease for 50 years.

Pre-School & After-School Programs

The Closter Nature Center is proud to offer its annual Summer Program to children ages 4 – 14. For over 50 years, campers have had an opportunity to explore the Nature Center’s 136 acres of ponds, streams, meadows and forests in a fun and nurturing environment. Our campers hike, dig, wade in the water, and examine nature, all under the supervision of a trained naturalist and an assistant.

Loved it, what a fantastic excursion right here in our neighborhood. Simply follow the trail markings to have fun. Several other paths cross the road.

a good location to bring young children. Several small creatures to view and learn about, along with at least four pathways. Boy Scouts, in my opinion, were fishing.
