For nearly two decades, Broughton Music & Art Center has been offering high-quality music and art education to the Kalamazoo and Northville communities in Michigan. With two store locations, we are home to over 600 students and 30 teachers who are passionate about helping you discover your musical abilities. Our private music lessons cover a broad range of instruments, such as voice, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass, drums/percussion, strings, woodwind, brass, mandolin, banjo, dobro, mountain & hammered dulcimer. Plus, we also offer group lessons, such as rock band, guitar class, percussion hand-drumming, slow jam hammered dulcimer group, composition and music day camp, so you can collaborate and have fun with other musicians.  Justin has taught at Broughton Music & Art Center since 2001, and teaches 45 students per week, from ages 4 to 74. Justin has been performing in bars, clubs, theaters, and arenas since he was fifteen. He has played with rock and roll bands, funk bands, bluegrass bands, country bands, reggae bands, and is the lead vocalist and guitarist/keyboardist of the legendary Northville-based psychedelic rock band, Social Bones, (formerly Baked Potato).

Howard Kagen earned his BME from Indiana University, and his Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from Eastern Michigan University. He has studied with Mr. William Adam of Indiana University and Mr. Roy Stephens of New York, NY. He taught in the Detroit Public Schools for 30 years, including serving as the Cass Tech High School Band Director. Mr. Kagen has taught all brass instruments, string bass, and music theory for over 30 years.

The staff is always friendly and helpful. My autistic son began taking guitar lessons here. They were excellent at taking the time to go over the various instructors to ensure we found a good match for my son, and they couldn't have chosen a better instructor; I've never seen my son open up so quickly to someone he's just met, and they have a great rapport. My son enjoys his weekly lessons and has learned a lot!
