At the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio, we strive to preserve the legacy of its namesake through educational programs, tours and research opportunities. Our mission is to provide public access to the philosophy of Alden B. Dow, while encouraging exploration and growth.

Our exciting programs are designed to help your students cultivate their critical thinking skills, and to foster an appreciation for architecture, design and the humanities. One of our core programs, “The Chemist and The Architect”, is a dynamic program designed for students that meets both our mission and the goals of the Michigan State Grade Level Content Expectations in Social Studies. We also work with various age levels and grades to develop programs that reinforce curricular objectives. We are happy to work with you to develop a program that strengthens your content goals.

4th Grade - The Chemist & The Architect Program

The Seven Grade Writing Program, At the Dow House, is a collaborative program developed by the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and Midland Public Schools. The program meets Common Core State. Standards for writing, while providing a unique and stimulating environment for students to participate in the process of writing. This is achieved by offering authentic, thought-provoking scenarios in each room at the Home and Studio that suggest that something may have happened in that room.  Every student is given the opportunity to explore the spaces and is challenged to develop sensory details and inferences into a writing piece. This program welcomes over 600 student writers each year and has met with great success.

7th Grade - Writing Program At The Dow House

The Young Writers Studio is a monthly, after-school meeting at the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio where area 6-8 grade writers can find a quiet place to write, a nurturing place to share their ideas with their writing peers and the opportunity to experience a space that inspires writers and storytellers of all levels.

The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio is a hidden gem in the Midlands. Every tour reveals something new. Summer camps for children are also fantastic. My daughter has been going for three years and cannot wait to go again next year! We adore this special place and the people who live in it with us.
