About North Star Sunderland in Sunderland, MA

every day. At North Star, we strive to provide an alternative to traditional schooling for teens who prefer to pursue their education differently. We provide support both in and out of the classroom, offering individual tutoring in a wide variety of subjects and a staff-to-student ratio of 1:4. Our members have gone on to attend some of the top universities in the country, including Brown, Columbia, MIT, and Amherst College. We recognize that the traditional high school diploma isn’t necessary for success in any area of life, and many of our families report less stress, increased communication, and improved relationships thanks to the North Star program. Our goal is to open all doors to non-traditional learners and help our members achieve their goals.

Cultivating Aesthetic Preferences

(6-week workshop, in-person) (Jaime Woodcock) This class explores aesthetic and artistic preferences with a focus on clothing. We will discuss why we dress the way we do, emphasizing practical skills to help students think more actively about their appearance as well as the practicality and applicability of cultivating aesthetic preferences in the first place. Each session in the course will focus on a theme: Theory, Noticing, Care-taking, Artistry, and Formality. Students will be given the opportunity to think deeply about the way they dress, and the different ways that clothing functions as communication, self-expression, art, and as a vehicle of consumerism. This class is aimed at all students regardless of artistic skill or background in fashion and is open to redirection based on student interest.

North Star Band

(In-person) (John Sprague and Johnny Williams) Want to be in a band?! Each year (well, except for last year) North Star musicians old and new come together to make a band. We generally focus on rock and pop tunes, both current and classic, but are open to other styles as well. We welcome original compositions by band members. Membership is primarily determined by your commitment to come each week, and your ability to contribute in some way to the music as an instrumentalist or singer. We work together to develop a set list of tunes to perform at North Star variety shows. Everyone is welcome to try it out.

Consent in the Romance Novel

(In-person) (Kizzi Collier) The romance novel is known for many things: Importantly, that they center around a relationship, that there will be a happy ending, and there are quite a few intimate scenes. However, sometimes it can be tricky to understand the veil of fantasy and reality. In this class, we will be reading romance novels together and discussing scenes between the couples, the protagonists’ friendships, and more to see where we find consent in the fictional novel and where we don't. In this class, we will also discuss the structure of a romance novel, famous romance novels, how romance began, what it’s like in popular culture, and more. Content Warning: Romance novels contain intimate and explicit scenes in them. Please keep this in mind if you wish to join the class, as some scenes and books are not for all readers.
