At our school, we understand how important it is for children to be central to their own learning. We prioritize creating a safe and respectful environment that allows kids to collaborate and co-construct knowledge with their peers. Our teachers and parents are also key players in this process, as they facilitate, guide, observe, support, and inspire children throughout their learning journey.
We also recognize the importance of the environment as a “third teacher.” Our classrooms are designed to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity, so kids can explore and discover new things. This flexible approach allows us to customize our curriculum each year, as children, families, teachers, and the classroom space come together to define the path for the year.
Newtowne’s Core Program lasts from 8:30-12:30 Monday - Friday. Orange Sea Stars and Purple Fish have the option of attending 3 or 5 days per week, while Blue Otters and Green Dragonflies attend 5-days per week. Children engage in a mix of Reggio Emilia-inspired indoor, outdoor, and enrichment activities and eat a snack and lunch at school with their peers. While the age cutoffs between classrooms can vary slightly from year to year, the classroom age ranges (on September 1st)

Extended Day Program
Our optional Extended Day program lasts from 12:30-3:30 and is available to families on a regular plan or drop-in basis. All students at Newtowne who attend the Core Program 3-or 5-days per week have the option adding Extended Day for some or all of the days they attend the Core Program. Extended Day includes rest time, snack time, and a mix of indoor, outdoor, and enrichment activities. In previous years, mixed-classroom activities were planned for Extended Day; however, children only remain with their Core Program classmates and teachers in the 2020-2021 year, in accordance with COVID-19 regulations.

Remote Program
Yellow Gulls classes are a new initiative in the 2020-2021 school year, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yellow Gulls programming is fully remote and designed for families who do not participate in Newtowne’s in-person programming. Once per week, Newtowne faculty lead children and caregivers in song, stories, and movement during a synchronous Zoom session and provide inspiration for at-home provocations. Included with these playgroups are children’s books and weekly sensory and art materials delivered right to your door, along with guidance for extending the activities at home beyond the playgroup sessions.
