Adventures in Science

The first week of Adventures in Science will provide campers a “hands-on, minds-on” experience to imagine, design, and build structures that have speed and extreme acceleration. Thinking like citizen scientists, we’ll take a trip to the airport where we learn how planes work and fly. We’ll fabricate rockets from scratch and blast them off to heights of 500ft! Using everyday materials, we’ll also construct catapults and other devices to send marshmallows and other projectiles flying. Co-operative learning, designing, testing, and healthy competition are all part of this week. Who knew science could be so much fun?!

Books that Cook

Books that Cook campers will work closely in small groups to create delicious recipes pulled right out of their favorite literature! Campers will create their own journal-style recipe books and have the opportunity to draw illustrations to go with their recipes. Junior chefs and bakers will participate in each step of the cooking process: counting, measuring, pouring, and mixing…and of course, eating! At the end of each session, campers will bring home her/his own hand-made recipe book filled with their art, recipes, and book titles used at camp. Any allergies or dietary restrictions will be taken into account for every recipe used, ensuring that the experience is healthy and fun for all!

Counselors in Training

Are you ready for a challenge? This three-week program is designed for motivated rising 9th and 10th graders interested in developing their own leadership styles and becoming counselors. CITs will spend one week learning skills and tools surrounding child behavior and leadership. After, they will spend the remaining two weeks placed in a Summer at Park program and partnered with an experienced mentor who will coach, encourage, and teach aspiring counselors how to lead a group of campers. Their mentors will provide periodic evaluations that will encourage and support each CIT to improve their social, supervisory, and leadership skills. Successful participants may be encouraged to apply for a counselor position in next summer. Participants accepted in the CIT program should anticipate meeting with the Summer at Park staff for an interview during the registration process and gathering as a group for at least one evening in the spring for a briefing about program expectations.
