About Self Help Incorporated Head Start

That’s why Head Start was created in 1965 – to serve children of low income families and involve their parents and communities in the process. It is based on the belief that all children have certain core needs and that by providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program, they can be met – especially for those of low income families. Head Start is one of the most successful pre-school programs in the country, and it is based on the notion that all children share certain core needs. It is designed to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary development program that meets those needs – particularly those of low income families. The program is unique in that it actively engages parents and communities in the process. This is why it was created in 1965 – to serve children of low income families and involve their families and communities in the program.
