About Bay Area Glass Institute in San Jose, CA

The Bay Area Glass Institute (BAGI) is an educational resource for our local community, providing high-quality hands-on experiences in a variety of glass art techniques. BAGI offers instruction, events, and rentals in furnace glass, flameworking, fusing, casting, and cold working. Through its Scholarship Fund, Summer Camp, and Visiting Artist Series, BAGI provides people access to glass art education. To generate the funds they need to operate and re-invest in programs, BAGI earns revenue through classes and events, grants from the City of San Jose and other arts and science organizations, and generous contributions from annual patrons.

Glassblowing Camp

This class is designed for students who want to immerse themselves in the magic of glass. Totally hands-on exercises allow you to learn the basics of traditional free-form glass blowing.

Fusing Arts Camp

Learn how to make beautiful fused glass in this fun and technical workshop. You’ll be introduced to kiln-formed glass through a variety of projects. You will learn how to cut and shape colored sheet glass. Students will learn various techniques like layering and assembly, painting with frit, and embedding wire inclusions. The goal of this class is a solid foundation of the properties of flat glass and to open up the possibilities of what glass can become.

Soft Glass Flameworking Camp

Learn how to wind molten glass on mandrels and achieve your desired shape by using heat control in the flame and tools to manipulate the glass. You will also learn several decorative techniques using glass stringers and frit. Vocabulary, resources, safety, and tools & equipment will also be covered. Over the course of this class students will learn the foundation of flameworking as well as the discipline to make a series of beads to string into an necklace.

Borosilicate Flameworking Camp

Learn to heat and gather borosilicate rods in the flame of a torch. Students will learn how to shape, sculpt, and construct forms working with this versatile material. In this class students will learn the fundamentals of working with borosilicate glass, safety in the shop, tool use, and torch mechanics.
