About The First Tee of the Coachella Valley in Palm Desert, CA

Golf can be a great way for kids to grow and learn important lessons about life. Our programs give children the opportunity to do just that in a safe and nurturing environment. Our trained coaches are dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of the game while also encouraging children to take on life’s challenges. Lessons on the course are a crucial part of our programs, but the real value lies in the life lessons that take place off the course. Our coaches use golf as a platform to help children learn about values such as respect, honesty and perseverance. They also help children learn how to manage their emotions and gain self-confidence. By providing a safe and fun environment, our programs make it possible for children to gain the skills needed to succeed both on and off the golf course. Our coaches are committed to helping kids grow and develop in a positive way, giving them the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges.

Age Based Curriculum: 7-9 YEARS OLD

First Tee Program for ages 7-9 teaches the game of golf in a fun, safe, and empowering environment. At this age group, we are introducing and engaging participants with both golf and life skills. Participants will get active and play golf with their peers to help them build inner strength, self-confidence, and enthusiasm for the game. Classes are designed to accommodate new and returning golfers of the same age. Participants will register and be grouped by age and will progress through the program as they “age up,” with lessons adjusted to challenge players at their skill level.

Age Based Curriculum: 10-12 YEARS OLD

The goal of First Tee Program’s Age 10-12 content is to support the exploration of both character and golf skills in active and collaborative ways. This group will contain participants ages 10-12 of mixed skill levels. For some, this will be their first introduction to the game of golf. Others will enter with multiple years of experience in First Tee. Coaches can introduce and teach the game of golf through a wide variety of active and group learning experiences that help to build inner strength, self-confidence, and an enthusiasm for the sport, while encouraging and supporting the development of positive Game Changing behaviors in fun and meaningful ways. Players at this age level may still be new to the game, but many have begun to master the basics of the golf swing, etiquette, and rules. The lessons and activities will provide multiple opportunities for coaches to engage with participants as they explore golf skills and character concepts that are valuable on and off the course.

Age Based Curriculum: 12-13 YEARS OLD

The goal of the Age 12-13 content is to focus on the development of both golf and character skills at an individual level. For this age group, self-confidence often comes into question and an opportunity for exploration of concepts of self should be prioritized. This group will have participants of mixed skill levels, and possibly more noticeable skill gaps emerging based on the amount of golf experience that the participants have. Prior sports experiences and participation in physical education should allow faster acquisition of skills for players that are newer to First Tee. The lessons and activities at this age will provide opportunities for participants to explore both golf skills and character commitments that support this stage of growth and development in early adolescents who are already in the process of exploring their identity as well as peer relationships. Coaches can further support the development of confidence in participants through additional opportunities for them to demonstrate mastery and growth in their golf skills and abilities.

Age Based Curriculum: 14+ YEARS OLD

The goal of the Age 14+ content is to provide multiple opportunities for participants to elaborate on, apply, and extend developing ideas and skills of both golf and character through new activities on and off the course both in a group context and at an individual level. Because participants enter First Tee according to their age and not their acquired golf skills, Age 14+ lessons and activities place a greater emphasis on the personal development of the participant. As participants learn more about who they are and what they are capable of, they have the opportunity at First Tee to begin to look towards the future and plan their own path.
