Fencing has long been a popular sport, with its roots in ancient times. But it has been enjoying a resurgence in the United States in the past decade. This is thanks in large part to the success of Mariel Zagunis and Sada Jacobson who medaled at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. This paved the way for the US Fencing Team to win numerous medals at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games. Even President Obama was so inspired by the team’s success that he chose to fence with one of the US Olympians, Tim Morehouse, at the White House. Now, fencing is an international sport with participants competing from countries such as France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Russia. Olympic fencing is a unique sport that brings the modern world together with traditional combat.
