About Open Strings Music Studio

Founded in 1997, Open Strings Music Studio has been a staple in the Livermore community for over two decades. Its founder, Jim Hurley, began the studio in the loft of the historic Schenone Building in downtown Livermore. It offered a variety of art classes, programs, and events in addition to its music program. In 2003, Open Strings moved to a two-bedroom cottage on Second Street, with a small group of music teachers sharing three lesson studios and a few art classes continuing on. In 2007, Fine Fretted Friends music store downtown was expanding, and Jim's efforts helped create the suite of lesson studios that Open Strings now calls home. 2009 saw Jim renovating an old structure adjacent to his 100-year-old south Livermore home. This small, but cozy, venue is now the home of Open Strings, where it continues to serve the community with music lessons, art classes, programs, and events.

Violen Class
The music library at Open Strings overflows with treasures I have collected in nearly 40 years of musical travels and explorations. All music has been carefully edited, annotated and updated for optimal educational value and utility. There are an abundance and wide variety of examples to entertain and amuse, as well as educate, students young and old, at all stages of musical development. Music theory and instrumental skills are highlighted throughout. Improvisation, arrangement and composition are encouraged and facilitated, as well.
