Wilderness Base Camp

Most campers choose the Base Camp program, which combines in-camp activities with time backpacking out on the trail. While in base camp, campers live as a family in small but diverse groups which are usually mixed gender and often mixed age. Each group has at least two counselors who make sure everyone shares in communal tasks like building fires, cooking, and cleaning up. Each morning, campers assemble after breakfast to learn about the activities being offered that day. Possible choices include archery, crafts, swimming, boating, arts, rock-climbing, music, and much more. Campers sleep outside under the stars most nights, or under tarps provided by camp.

Wilderness Backpacking Programs

These trips are a wilderness adventure for campers who want to stretch their legs and explore lots of back country. These programs start at Unalayee’s base camp with itinerary planning, food packing and gearing up. They return to base camp with enough time for campers to enjoy activities, campfires and some well-earned hearty meals before heading home. Campers spend 11 consecutive days of the 15-day session in the back country. The itineraries of each trip are determined session by session depending on the backpacking experience and desires of the campers on each trip. Campers get the chance to help plan the itineraries for the trip they will go on. In each session there will be one trail program that focuses on longer distances and seeing more destinations and one that covers less distance and focuses more on lakes and creeks nearer to the Unalayee Basin.

Family Camp

Just like Unalayee’s programs for kids only, our Family programs are centered on simple outdoor living. At our wilderness summer camp, there is no electricity or indoor plumbing. Our showers are solar. Everyone pitches in with the chores. We provide meals, activities for all ages, campfire programs and necessary equipment and facilities. Families camp out in tents or under the stars. While at Camp, families can hike, swim, fish, play or just relax in the mountains together. Our trained staff offer daily activities such as rock climbing, boating on the lake, nature hikes, arts and crafts, archery and more.
