Saint Nicholas is known in popular tradition as the gift-bringer. This originates from the story of his providing dowries for three poor daughters of a Christian so they would not be forced into a life of sin. The custom of gift-giving in his memory was established during the Middle Ages and has evolved into the traditional celebration of Saint Nicholas Day on December 6. Saint Nicholas was born in Patara of Lycia in the third century to devout and wealthy parents who provided him with a Christian upbringing and education. Sadly, he was orphaned at a young age. Later, he was ordained a priest and when the bishop of his district died, he was appointed Bishop of Myra of Lycia. Saint Nicholas is known for his great faith, his commitment to Orthodoxy and his generous charity. He was so devoted to his faith that he could even quiet a stormy sea with his prayers. To this day, sailors honor him as their protector. Saint Nicholas is also recognized for his gift-giving. According to legend, he provided dowries so three poor Christian girls would not have to resort to a life of sin. This story inspired the tradition of gift-giving in his memory, which is celebrated on Saint Nicholas Day on December 6.
