5 Fun Ways to Encourage a Child's Interest in Nature

As parents and educators, it’s important to nurture a child’s interest in the natural world and to educate them about the importance of protecting the environment. It’s not hard to get a 5-8 year old excited about nature! Here are five fun ways to do it.

1. Set up a Nature Table

Create a special space in your home or classroom for a nature table. This can be as simple as a small table with a cloth on it or as elaborate as a miniature wildlife garden. Fill it with things you’ve collected from nature such as leaves, stones, feathers, shells, sticks, and flowers. This will give your child a visual reminder of all the beauty in the natural world right from the comfort of their own home.

2. Take a Hike

Pack a lunch, your child’s favorite snacks, and plenty of water, and head out for a hike. Choose a hike that is age-appropriate, and make sure to bring along a field guide or nature book to help identify plants, animals, and other features along the way.

3. Plant a Garden

Planting a garden is a fun and rewarding activity. Choose easy-to-grow plants that will thrive with little care, such as sunflowers, zinnias, and pumpkins. Plant some food crops as well, such as carrots, lettuce, and radishes, so your child can get a taste of the food they help grow.

4. Learn about Birdwatching

Birdwatching is a great way to get kids interested in nature. Help your child identify the birds in your backyard, and keep a journal of their sightings. If you don’t have birds in your backyard, consider taking a trip to a nearby park or nature center.

5. Participate in Citizen Science Projects

Citizen science projects are a great way to engage your child in nature. Have your child participate in projects such as the Great Backyard Bird Count or eBird. This will help your child learn about the natural world while contributing to the scientific community.

By taking advantage of these five fun activities, you can easily encourage a child’s interest in nature. Nature is a beautiful thing, and introducing a child to it at a young age can have a lasting impact on their appreciation for the environment.
