Led by their fearless leader, Captain Colorific, a sprightly little fellow who wears a paint-splattered cape and a hat with a rainbow plume, these kids know how to have fun with colors. With paintbrushes that twirl like magic wands, they create a riot of colors that could make a rainbow look pale! They can turn a boring, blank canvas into a sprawling jungle teeming with fluorescent flamingos, polka-dotted panthers, and turtles wearing top hats. Their favorite game is 'Guess the Goo,' where they close their eyes, dip their hands in paint, and guess the color by its feel. And let's not forget the epic paint fights that end with everyone looking like a walking, giggling abstract art masterpiece. Don't even ask about the time they tried to paint Captain Colorific's pet chameleon, Chroma - let's just say he ended up as the most colourful creature in all of New Jersey! In each class, children are exposed to the ways artists throughout history have employed formal principles of picture making and technique in order to translate their deepest feelings and thoughts into a visual statement. Class discussion centering on the analysis, interpretation and critique of art work is an integral part of every class. We encourage children to learn to articulate their thoughts and feelings about what they observe and what they create. We spark discussion by asking the right questions and supply children with the vocabulary they need to talk about art.
