Shukokai karate is a traditional Japanese martial art based on Shito Ryu (one of the first styles of karate) and refined by its founder, Soke Shigeru Kimura, 10th Dan. The style is defined by a one hit, one kill (or one meeting, one chance) striking power and embodies the values of discipline, focus, respect, patience, temperance, self-esteem, and creativity.
Students at the dojo (school) learn about technique, fighting, and the use of timing and character building on the path toward achieving their black belt. Classes are taught by Sensei Justin DeSalvo (5th Dan), Sempai Lynn DeSalvo (3rd Dan), Sempai Chris Lynch (3rd Dan), and various instructors.
Essex Shukokai Karate is affiliated with the American Shukokai Karate Union (ASKU), the national governing body of dojos teaching Kimura Shukokai, as well as Kimura Shukokai International, the world governing body, which represents over 20 member countries practicing this style of karate.
Programs
The classes, camps and experiences this business offers.
Little Dragons (ages 3-4)
The Little Dragons class caters to our youngest students at Essex Shukokai Karate. Classes are on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. This gives children ages three and four (3-4) the opportunity to learn through playing in a safe environment. If they are able, students of Little Dragons may take the Saturday Ninja class as well.
We focus on flexibility, stamina, and muscle building through our fun-time section of the program. We strive to familiarize our students with Japanese terms where-ever possible (etiquette, counting, positions, etc.).
Ninja (ages 5-7)
We offer the Ninja class from Tuesdays through Fridays from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings from 9:45 to 10:30. Each 45-minute class gives students ages five to seven (5-7) the chance to learn karate skills, kumite (sparring), and kata (forms). Through this process, they gain agility, flexibility, and strength.
Samurai (ages 8-12)
Samurai classes at Essex Shukokai Karate are for children ages eight through twelve (8-12). Classes are on Tuesdays through Fridays from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturdays mornings from 10:45 to 11:30.
Classes focus on karate technique, impact, and speed. We teach students a variety of kata (forms) as well. Students from the Samurai class are eligible to take part in training sessions and tournaments.
