The Explorer Club

The Explorer Club program provides 8, 9, and 10 year-olds the opportunity to come to camp for the first time, for just one week. We know that kids are different and not everyone is ready to head off to camp for two weeks. As you look to provide your child with new experiences, this is a great way to get familiar with camp and being away from home. Our counseling staff are compassionate role models who will help them find their way, learn new skills, and teach them about God’s love. This one-week program gives your child a chance to experience the best of camp: fun activities like rocketeering, target shooting (with BB Guns), swimming lessons, and gaga, to name a few. The Whitetail (Deer Run) and Moose (Brookwoods) cabins go everywhere together as a unit for the entire week during our scheduled activity periods. “Explorers” can spend time with other campers or siblings during 4th period. A highlight of the week is a boat ride to Plum Island in Roberts Cove, cooking dinner and s’mores over a campfire, singing camp songs, listening to loons, and sleeping in platform tents.

SCUBA Program

SCUBA is offered to campers ages 12 and older. SCUBA certification is useful for a lifetime of fun and adventure. In addition to an introduction to SCUBA class, we also offer PADI Open Water Diver certification. The PADI course lasts for two weeks and meets each afternoon for about 2 hours. It includes an academic section (textbooks and video are supplied), a confined water section where safety skills are learned and campers get comfortable under water, and a series of open dives to explore Lake Winnipesaukee. Upon completion, campers under 15 will be certified as Jr. Open Water Divers and those 15 and older will be certified as Open Water Drivers. SCUBA certification is useful for a lifetime of fun and adventure. Our plan is to offer this course for one session each month by a Certified Instructor. However, each summer the session varies as we are dependent on the instructor’s schedule.

Horsemanship Program

Horsemanship is a big part of our camp tradition and sets us apart from other New England camps. In 1964 we opened our own stables, the same year as Deer Run opened. Our horsemanship program is designed to help campers develop various riding skills, including horsemanship, grooming, safety, and care of horses. Instruction is based on English style riding and campers are split into skill level groups: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Campers do not need previous riding experience and every summer we have a few first-time riders! Our current barn and riding corral were built in 2008 and we feel it is the nicest camp riding facility in New England. The stable can house up to 14 horses and includes an enclosed tack room and a bathroom. The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) trains our staff annually.
