    About Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts in Matthews, NC

    Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts began in 1995 with a mission to bring quality theatre to the Matthews area. The original Board of Directors, made up of parents, theatre professionals and educators, was determined to create a space where young performers could shine. The first production, Alice in Wonderland, was a huge success. With over 100 children auditioning and 50 cast members, it was clear that the local community wanted to be involved in the performing arts. Since then, the Playhouse has experienced tremendous growth. Today, the Playhouse offers a full season of plays and classes year round, with a total attendance of over 20,000 during the 2018-2019 season. Over 1,000 campers participated in 45 different summer camps, and our classes served over 250 young people. Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts is proud to have fulfilled its mission to bring quality theatre to the Matthews area.

    School of Theatre Classes

    Our NEW Technical Theatre Apprenticeship program offers students in Grades 9-12 the opportunity to learn the fundamental technical elements of a theatrical production in a positive, supportive environment. Through hands-on instruction and mentoring, high school students will gain an understanding of the various disciplines in technical theatre; design, production crew, and shop crew. Students will also explore theatrical design (lights, scenery, props) while learning commonplace tasks of working backstage. The second half of the class is project based where the students will collectively create an item for a hypothetical show.

    Matthews Playhouse Mini Camps

    Matthews Playhouse is happy to introduce One Day Mini Camps for grades K-3 and 4-6th. These camps happen in conjunction with teacher workdays on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school calendar. Each camp will have themed activities with a theater focus. Join us for a day of singing, dancing, acting and crafting.

    Satellite Summer Camps

    Matthews Playhouse is partnering with Indian Trail Parks and Recreation to present our satellite summer camps! These camps will be located within the Indian Trail Town Hall. Campers will have a week of learning songs, dances, and scenes and will conclude with a performance on the outdoor stage at Crossing Paths Park.
