About The Ballet School of Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC

In 1980, M'Liss Dorrance and Gretchen Vickery founded the Ballet School of Chapel Hill with the aim of providing quality ballet instruction to the local community. The school quickly expanded in its original home in the Village Shopping Center on Elliot Road, with Jennifer Potts and Carol Richard joining the team in 1981. In 1992, the creative planning of Gretchen led the school to its current location on 1603 East Franklin Street. The new building, designed by Dail Dixon, was recognised by the Town of Chapel Hill Appearance Commission with a Design Excellence award the following year. Today, the school offers comprehensive programs in Ballet, Preballet, Rhythm Tap, Jazz, Modern Dance, and Fencing. In addition, the Artgarden Montessori Children's House, which was also founded by the original foursome, now inhabits the same premises.

BALLET FOCUS PROGRAM

The Ballet School of Chapel Hill has an ongoing commitment to provide the highest caliber dance training and a profoundly positive dance experience for our students. Whether hoping to dance professionally, dance in college, or simply excel in this demanding art form, ballet dancers must dance nearly every day. Like a varsity sport, the dedication of time and energy is significant. The intent of the Ballet Focus Program is to offer students an opportunity to further develop their artistry and technical skills, which we believe will ultimately result in a more rewarding experience. This program is open to dancers assigned to Ballet 5, 6, 7, and Advanced. Please notify your teacher if you are interested in participating in the Ballet Focus Program. Dancers selected for the program will receive an individually crafted schedule with a minimum of four or more ballet classes per week.

BOYS’ BALLET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The program is intended to support and nurture boys’ interest and training in ballet. Dance training offers students the unique combination of demanding physical challenges, equal to or exceeding any athletic activity, and a creative, expressive outlet. This program also promotes self-discipline in a non-competitive environment. The Ballet School’s Boys’ Ballet Scholarship Program is open to boys ages 8 and up and is free of charge to those students able to fulfill the course of study. Scholarship students are expected to take a one hour “Boys’ Class,” and at least one additional ballet technique class at an appropriate level of study (on a different day of the week). Students perform in the Ballet School’s annual recital.
