About Ligo Dojo of Budo Karate in Chapel Hill, NC

Classes at our dojo are perfect for those motivated to excel in martial arts, but shouldn’t be considered a way to motivate those who are struggling. Our classes are smaller, so instructors can give more individual attention and keep lessons brisk. Instead of a business that provides after-school care and profit, we are a program that teaches adults and teens at the highest level. We also offer a kids’ program to ensure that they are prepared for our adult/teen program as they grow up. Our dojo is ideal for those seeking an intensive and rewarding martial arts learning experience. We provide a unique approach to learning; emphasizing individual attention with small classes and an ever-changing curriculum that keeps students on their toes. Unlike schools that provide after-school care and profit, we are focused on teaching teens and adults at the highest level. We also offer a kids’ program to ensure that they are prepared for our adult/teen program as they grow up. Our dojo is designed for those committed to mastering martial arts. Classes are smaller and the curriculum is constantly evolving, allowing teachers to give more personalized instruction and keep lessons moving. We are the opposite of after-school programs designed to make a profit; we are a program that teaches teens and adults at the highest level, and also runs a kids’ program to prepare them for our adult/teen program as they get older.

Kids Classes, Ages 6-11

At Ligo Dojo, we will teach your child authentic karate. One of the greatest moments for us is when kids turn 12 or 13 and move up into our Team Training class and realize that their kid's class has adequately prepared them for what the adults and teens do in class, and our adults and teens perform at a very high level. Kids have fun and feel accomplished, but karate class is not recreation or playtime. The classes are structured classes for 50 minutes with a lesson plan. Kids arrive ready for class (dressed, hair tied, hydrated), they work for the entire time while at the dojo, and then class dismisses. They are taught that a dojo is a place for focus, not a place for play.

Team Training simply means that we teach to the class average AND ensure that the class average is always moving forward. In order to do so, we are also teaching the students how to hold their own on a team that depends on them to advance. The result is that the students will become the best that they can be as aided by a unified group that is expected to set that same success-energy role model. Prospective students and parents of teens should consider carefully, however, whether they believe themselves (or their child) to be up to the challenge. All of the team training occurs in 3 classes per week that team members should do their best to attend (all or most of them; please see Class Schedule page), and people of all types can be successful if they are both present in class AND present with positive growth energy and a desire to support the team. Parents of unmotivated or undisciplined teens should not consider our program a means of making their kids motivated or disciplined.
