At Parents Magazine, we believe in the power of art therapy to build a healthier, stronger society. Art therapy is an accessible way to help diverse communities build resilience and foster positive mental health. We advocate for a strengths-based, culturally-responsive approach to art therapy, education, and research. This research-based approach has been proven to help individuals, families, and entire communities reach their greatest potential. 

Art therapy is a powerful tool for improving mental health, emotional regulation, and communication. It can be used to reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and help individuals recognize their own strengths and potential. Through art therapy, individuals can learn to trust their own unique creative process and discover their voice. 

Parents Magazine is committed to advancing the well-being of diverse communities through art therapy. We believe that with the right resources and support, individuals can form a more positive relationship with themselves and their environment. We are proud to support research and education initiatives that promote access to culturally-responsive art therapy and help build healthier societies.

We provide art therapy services to students in system-level classes through the Exceptional Children’s Program in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City schools as well as at Voyager Academy, a charter school based in Durham. Students are generally seen in small groups, and our goal is to provide positive experiences for them by challenging them with new sensory experiences, increasing their ability to communicate in a group atmosphere, providing opportunities to gain a sense of mastery and flexibility through the process of artmaking, helping them identify and respond to different emotions, and giving voice to their inner selves through the art. The students are encouraged to be playful, curious, and tenacious in their artistic process, and the process itself is emphasized over the end product in our work with them.

EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN’S ART THERAPY PROGRAM

Many of the children in our newcomer program have spent their whole lives in refugee camps or other isolated or dangerous situations, and, because of this, most have had very little formal schooling. Art is a shared language that helps children communicate, build friendship skills, and address issues of acculturation. The images we have seen in these groups are a combination of cultures, landscapes, and symbols of war and peace. Art therapy is a safe way for participants to talk about their past experiences and the trauma that they may have endured. Art is also a powerful way to create images of hope for the future. 

THE NEWCOMER ART THERAPY PROJECT

Grow Your World is a youth-driven community engagement and development program grounded in abundance, community and empowerment. Their mission is to connect community members through multicultural, and inclusive relationships to build sustainable personal and professional enrichment opportunities.
