They're no ordinary youngsters. They are the "Muddy Boot Brigade," led by their delightfully quirky leader, Captain Corn Cob. 

Captain Corn Cob, a scarecrow with twinkling button eyes and a corn husk mustache, takes his job quite seriously. Armed with a rake for a sword and a tractor for his trusty steed, he trains his brigade in the secret art of farming. These kids can plant a seed faster than you can say "squash," and they are known for talking in 'veggie vernacular,' using words like 'spudtacular' or 'berry good.' 

In this wacky world, the kids compete to grow the biggest tomato and race on speedy wheelbarrows, leaving clouds of dust and peals of laughter in their wake. They have mud pie bake-offs and create scarecrows that could make a potato laugh!

As many of us know, Native Americans were the first farmers of our land. Native women were particularly influential, leading their villages and demonstrating amazing agricultural skills. The tribes moved seasonally between established hunting, fishing, and growing/gathering sites. 

Today, students of all ages have the chance to learn about nutrition and the life cycle of plants and animals through field trips and summer work. People of all abilities can participate in meaningful work and contribute to their community. Thousands of students, volunteers, and community members have now been introduced to the importance of productive open space, organic agriculture, and supporting local farms and farmers.

At Highlander Farm in East Falmouth, MA, families have access to healthy, sustainable produce. The farm follows a chemical-free approach, using sustainable agriculture to protect the environment and yield nutrient-dense food. Through a long-term lease with the Town of Silt, Highlander Farm is able to grow a variety of produce on 5 acres of land.

In 2020, the farm produced 8,000 pounds of fresh produce on a half acre of land. This number increased to 30,000 pounds in 2021, with plans to cultivate 1.5 acres in 2022. Thanks to the dedicated staff at Highlander Farm, Garfield County families and those in the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys have access to healthy, nutrient-dense produce.
