At the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon (MABA), visitors are invited to explore the beauty of nature through the lens of art. MABA is home to an extensive collection of bird art, making it a professional art museum with a unique mission: to connect people to nature through art. The MABA Education Center in Canton offers educational programs to visitors of all ages. Although the gallery is currently closed, MABA is hard at work developing a new vision for sharing and featuring world-class bird art. Those fortunate enough to visit past exhibitions have had the pleasure of seeing art by internationally-recognized artists whose work is truly inspired by nature.

Join a BNC Teacher Naturalist every week to explore, learn and play. Use your senses to explore the natural world! This program will encourage active learning through outdoor walks, interactive lessons, and art projects. Each program offers a new nature theme to explore and discover through hands-on/minds-on activities. Join us as we explore the beauty of the changing seasons, and how animals adapt to those changes.

This program is composed of activities for children ages 3-5 with an accompanying adult. Activities may include: songs, crafts, running games and explorations. Please check out our Adult or All Ages programs for participants over 12 years of age.

This program will be held entirely outdoors, so please bring rain and cold weather gear as needed. In the case of storms, we will reschedule the session.

Early Explorers (Ages 3-5)

Botanical Arts can be thought about in many ways. Some painters of flowers try to communicate a flower's spirit, while botanical illustrators often use a scientific approach to accurately draw the plant's form and function. At other times, botanical art may be used for plant portraiture. At Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, our intent is to learn how to draw and paint the flowers and trees that grow here as well as vegetables and fruits we enjoy throughout the year. We will find ourselves overlapping among scientific botanical illustration, botanical art, flower painting, and plant portraiture.

Using watercolor pencils, colored pencils, and graphite, our instruction will begin with gaining a strong understanding of line, shape, and tonal drawing. Then we will add color and realistic textures. We will learn to identify and illustrate important key features, such as leaves, twigs, buds, petals, and seeds. Color studies, exercises, and composition will be practiced throughout the course.

Our award-winning school programs can bring the natural world to you and your students through field trips and classroom explorations that are aligned with Massachusetts Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Our programs are designed to enhance students’ understanding of species and habitats; ecological concepts such as food webs, cycles, systems, adaptation, and evolution; climate change; and interrelationships between people and nature, while giving them a chance to connect with nature on an emotional level and practice key science skills such as modeling, arguing from evidence, and collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.

Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon

This area is ideal for a short and simple hike. Although I haven't visited the museum yet, the paths are tranquil, and one of my favorite sections is near to the river.
