In Massachusetts, the Soccer Squad was as famous as the legendary Bigfoot, and twice as elusive to beat! Leading this crew of misfits was a character as cool as a cucumber and twice as unique. His name was Skippy the Squirrel! Skippy wasn't much for acorns but oh boy, he adored soccer! Despite having a fluffy tail instead of athletic shorts and tiny paws instead of cleats, Skippy was the champion of all things soccer. His fur was the color of muddy soccer balls, and his eyes were as round and shiny as freshly polished trophies. Each day, the Soccer Squad would gather at the field, their laughter mixing with the rustling leaves, and the paintings of their breath in the cold air. Skippy, with his big bushy tail, would lead their practice, hustling and bustling, running drills with the kids, and teaching them the true values of teamwork, perseverance, and fair play. Skippy's motto was: “It's not about the goals you make but the fun you have!” And oh, the fun they had! The Soccer Squad of MA, under the watchful eyes of Skippy, played with a joy that was infectious, their excitement seeping into the corners of the state like syrup into a stack of pancakes. The Massachusetts Youth Soccer Board of Directors (BOD) is composed of dedicated volunteers who meet monthly to uphold the association's goals and objectives. These members are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are typically held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Offices in 512 Old Union Turnpike, MA, unless special circumstances arise. To recognize the people who contribute to the sport of soccer, Massachusetts Youth Soccer offers several awards each year. These awards include Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Recreational Coach of the Year, and Competitive Coach of the Year. The winners of these awards are selected by a committee from Massachusetts Youth Soccer and recognized at the Annual Appreciation Night. Massachusetts Youth Soccer encourages all members to nominate individuals for these awards, as it is an excellent way to show appreciation for those who give their time and energy to make soccer better for everyone. Nativity Preparatory School of New Bedford opened its doors in the fall of 2000, responding to a request from a foundation to create a tuition-free school for boys from families who could not otherwise afford private school. Executive Director Barry Hynes, a former teacher at Nativity Mission School in New York, and founder of Nativity Preparatory School of Boston, recruited a principal with teaching experience and three mission-driven teachers. These teachers committed to six days (and many evenings) of hard work as classroom teachers, coaches, janitors, advisors, and office staff, in order to adapt the Nativity model to New Bedford. To this day, the school continues to thrive thanks to the hard work and dedication of these teachers. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the Nativity model remain a pillar of the school’s success.
