About Northwest Special Recreation Association- NWSRA in Rolling Meadows, IL

For over 40 years, NWSRA has been making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. This unique partnership of 17 Park Districts provides recreational opportunities for children and adults alike. Led by certified staff, NWSRA offers thousands of innovative programs and services each year. Individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to make friends, have fun, go new places, learn new things, be included, and celebrate their lives. NWSRA is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive environment for all. This commitment has been recognized with a Distinguished Accredited Agency award from the Illinois Park and Recreation Association as well as the National Recreation and Park Association's Excellence in Inclusion Award for national leadership in diversity and inclusion initiatives. NWSRA has been enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and beyond for over 40 years.

Lightning Athletics

NWSRA trains over 600 athletes year-round in a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, baseball, gymnastics and more.

Community Sensory Garden

Built in partnership with the Hanover Park Park District, the NWSRA Community Sensory Garden welcomes individuals of all ability levels to explore, play, learn, and grow in a natural environment. The garden features plants, vegetables, an accessible walkway, seating and several interactive amenities that cultivate an increased connection to nature. Through the knowledge and expertise of Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) and Certified Park and Recreation Professionals (CPRP), children and adults expand their boundaries through nature-based learning and play. NWSRA is proud to offer this inclusive space, which fosters an increased sense of community while providing equitable access to nature.

Leisure Education

NWSRA partners with local schools to provide outstanding Leisure Education experiences for students with disabilities. Through the NWSRA Leisure Education program, students learn valuable skills that can be used beyond the classroom. Activities are designed to meet the goals of each classroom through a collaborative planning process with teachers. NWSRA looks forward to serving the needs and meeting the diverse interests of students through Leisure Education!
