In the summer of 1913, River Forest residents voted in favor of establishing a Park District to provide small parks and recreation grounds for their growing village. The election saw 395 votes in favor and 249 against. Judge John E. Owens canvassed the election and the District was officially established, with Robert L. Benson elected as the first Board president. Since then, the Park District has seen tremendous growth, both in terms of park acquisition and development projects, and in its variety of programming opportunities for children, teens, and adults.

Classes for infants through age 6 are designed to provide experiences to help the little ones grow, develop, learn and interact with the world around them. These classes focus on music, creative play, storytime, art, and science. Some classes are with a caregiver while others are drop-off programs depending on age.

Early Childhood

The River Forest Park District offers a variety of programs for youth and teens. From art, music, STEM, and special interest programs such as SafeSitter workshops and Improv Club for Kids, there's something for all abilities and interests.

Youth Variety

The River Forest Park District offers weekly morning and afternoon summer camp programs, allowing our residents greater flexibility in their summer planning.
