About Community Music And Arts Center, Harper College in Palatine, IL

Harper College’s Performing Arts Center is a professional venue designed to showcase the work of talented theatre, music, stagecraft and dance performers. With the capacity to seat over 400 people, the Center provides an opportunity for performers to share their art with a larger audience. If you’re looking to develop your skills in art, dance, music, theatre or writing, the Community Music & Arts Center offers classes taught by experienced and passionate instructors. Classes are designed to help you master the skills you need to express yourself creatively, while also helping you understand the social and historical implications of engaging with the arts. At the Community Music & Arts Center, we believe that arts should be accessible and a part of everyday life. We offer a variety of programs aimed at making sure you have the tools and resources you need to fully experience and appreciate the arts within your own environment.

LMU0036 - Piano Pleasure, Beginners 1 and 2

This class is designed for students who have had little or no previous piano lessons. Using the Alfred Piano 101 text, Beginners 1 will focus on music notation and staff note reading, basic rhythms, finger exercises, and playing short songs in a variety of styles. For those who have had some previous piano experience, Beginners 2 will expand on previously learned concepts and will focus on advancing staff reading with key signatures, playing with both hands simultaneously, scale and chord technique, and playing music in a wider range of styles. Students will advance through the Piano 101, Book 1 by Lancaster and Refrow, published by Alfred. Tuition does not include books, students are expected to buy their own prior to the beginning of the course. Instruction includes group activities and individual attention in our state of the art Yamaha Clavinova keyboard lab.

Sing, move, and play! Your child will explore music and movement in a fun, playful, non-performance oriented class that encourages participation, creativity, and self-expression. Our research-based curriculum is developmentally appropriate for ages 4-6 without an adult and will include the development of the singing voice, solfege singing, beat awareness, rhythm and tonal patterns, small and large motor movement, and playing instruments — all in a fun-filled 45-minute class!

LEI0002 - Drawing for Beginners

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and sketching which you can apply to other mediums. Using a unique and highly effective approach, the instructor will guide you through the process of how to draw simple objects from real life. Working primarily with pencil, you will develop skills in composition, shading and one and two point perspective. You will develop an understanding of light and shadow while drawing a variety of objects of various materials. This course is designed for beginners, but it is also suitable for artists seeking a refresher. This class is online.
