In 1983, the Kumon Center of West San Jose opened its doors, becoming one of the first Kumon centers in Northern California. Initially only offering Kumon Math, the center added Japanese Kokugo in 1985 and the Reading program in 1991. In 1999, the Otsuka family took over the center, providing the three subjects while running two other Kumon centers. Today, the Otsuka family still operate the West San Jose center, with Chieko Otsuka, their daughter, as the Head Instructor. Chieko has been an instructor since 2006 and is supported by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otsuka, who are still present during center hours. With over 35 years of experience, the Otsuka family remain as one of the pioneers of Kumon in the Bay Area, providing quality instruction and support to Kumon families.
