PROGRAM: RE-IMAGINING BROADWAY (WEEK ONE) AGES: 9-14

Exciting things happen when we see a production through a new lens. Some recent Broadway hits have been given a fresh look and are “WOWing” audiences worldwide. WICKED in Brazil, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the Olney Theatre Center, THE SECRET GARDEN at the Ahmanson, and OKLAHOMA at St. Anne’s Warehouse are examples of shows that have made major theatre news by using innovative design, diverse casting, and radical script re-working. Larissa Fasthorse, who will soon be the first Native American playwright on Broadway, has added new and relevant book material to the NETworks National Tour of PETER PAN. The theatre world is buzzing! Theatre students of today will be tomorrow’s theatre makers. This summer program will allow students to see themselves in roles and in shows they might not have imagined before. We will start each morning with a student-driven design concept for a Broadway show. Students will have the opportunity to draw and create costume and scenic renderings from a variety of Broadway shows. In the second hour of the program, we will explore acting techniques through scene-work from hit musicals. And, in the last hour, students will learn songs from some of their favorite Broadway shows.

PROGRAM: PLAYWRIGHTS RETREAT AGES: 9-14

On the beautiful arts district campus here in Liberty Station, students will explore sculpture, murals, paintings, photographs, and more each morning on our instructor-guided walk-abouts. These art pieces will serve as inspiration for students through a series of writing prompts, as they work on solo material. In the second half of each morning, we will work in the TAS+SD studio on a group devised (collaboratively created, developed and written) piece. The focus of this program is to hone writing skills, broaden the scope of creativity, and to prep students for entry into the California Young Playwrights Contest, a unique opportunity offered to California students each year.
