John Montgomery made history on August 28, 1883 when he successfully soared through the sky in a glider aircraft. This pioneering feat took place in Otay Mesa and is remembered to this day. In 1950, a tribute to Montgomery was erected in the form of a 90-foot silver wing from a Consolidated Aircraft B-32 “Dominator” bomber. Then in 1964, the Waller family donated a parcel of land to the site for a park in memory of the Wallers' son. This park stands in honor of John Montgomery's remarkable achievement.
