Exploration is an exciting adventure that has taken us all over the world. It has allowed us to discover new lands, cultures, and animals. Explorers have gone to the remotest parts of the earth, deep sea diving, and even space exploration. Here are 10 interesting facts about exploration that can make your 13-8 year olds really curious about it. 1. Christopher Columbus is the most famous explorer of all time. He traveled to the Americas in 1492 and was the first European to do so. 2. The first female explorer to circumnavigate the world was Jeanne Baret. She disguised herself as a man and sailed with the crew of Louis Antoine de Bougainville from 1766-1769.
3. Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to lead an expedition to circumnavigate the world. His journey started in 1519 and ended in 1522. 4. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to successfully climb Mount Everest in 1953. 5. The first manned mission to the moon was Apollo 11 in 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon's surface. 6. Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. 7. The deepest point in the ocean is the Marianas Trench. It is over 11km deep and was first explored in 1960 by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh. 8. The famous explorer Marco Polo traveled from Europe to Asia in the 13th century. He documented his journey in the book The Travels of Marco Polo. 9. The first successful air balloon flight was made in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers in France. 10. The first successful submarine voyage was made by American inventor Robert Fulton in 1800.
