About Camp McDowell

McDowell is a place of inclusion and connection. We foster an environment of exploration and discovery, and our mission is to create an enriching experience for all who visit. McDowell is the largest Episcopal camp and conference center in the United States. With 834 beds, it is a ministry of the Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Alabama and has been welcoming people from all faiths and backgrounds since 1947. This 1200-acre campground features canyons, trails, streams, rivers, and waterfalls, and includes the McDowell Environmental Center, McDowell Farm School, the Alabama Folk School, Summer Camp on Clear Creek, Bethany Village, and the Conference Center. At McDowell, we strive to create a supportive environment of exploration and discovery. Our goal is to provide an enriching and inclusive experience for everyone who visits.

MCDOWELL SUMMER CAMP
With roots since 1923, our summer camp program is one of the oldest in the country. Each summer camp session features a unique theme designed by a priest from the Diocese and program staff that provides daily, age-appropriate programs and activities that incorporate skits, songs, art, and a healthy dose of humor.  These programs encourage learning through scripture, the traditional teachings of the church, and personal and contemporary issues with themes ranging from the environment to discipleship.

YOUTH FOLK CAMP
Join us for Youth Folk Camp - our only Alabama Folk School Workshop designed just for rising 5th-12th graders. Youth Folk Camp is a unique combination of summer overnight camp and folk school instruction in music, pottery, painting, and more! Campers may choose one major and minor class for the workshop, all taught by master musicians and artists. Some experience with violin, guitar, or banjo is required for music class majors.
