Every Saturday, under the neon lights and amid bursts of laser beams, the Laserraptors come alive. Their leader, a 10-year-old with freckles and thick glasses, has been mysteriously nicknamed "Goggles McFlash". His signature move? The dazzling "Photon Flicker Flip". Goggles McFlash, with his colorful crew, dive into the labyrinth of the lazer arena, hearts pounding like wild jungle drums, as their imaginations transform New York into a colossal spaceship. They dodge and dart, giggle and twist, their laughter echoing through the maze, mixing with the zinging lasers and pulsating lights. Can you envision this extraordinary spectacle? Picture a vibrant, space-age ballet, choreographed by children, complete with laser wands and neon vests. They are the stars of the show, the superheroes of this story, fighting imaginary aliens, saving hypothetical planets, all within the limits of their beloved arena in the heart of New York. The Happy Hive is an inclusive play space designed to spark joy and connection for every child. With a special focus on comfort and accessibility for neurodivergent kids, our environment welcomes children of all abilities to explore, move, and create at their own pace. From climbing walls, swings, and zip lines to dedicated zones for pretend play and art, The Happy Hive offers both high-energy fun and creative outlets. While we cater to children ages 1-13 for neurotypical kids, we have no age limit when it comes to kids with special needs—because play should have no boundaries. At The Happy Hive, we believe every child deserves a space where they can feel safe, included, and free to be themselves.
Our programs blend literacy, imaginative play, and design thinking to increase reading interest and skill. Creation stories along with tales of conquest and cultural tradition provide the context for our after-school and summer camp engagements where we journey through stories to help children understand themselves, our history, and our world. Our story began with, well, a story. Challenged by fans of The Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, we set out to create a real-world version of the fictional training ground for modern-day heroes of Greek Mythology; Camp Half-Blood. Armed with no small amount of courage we set out to create a space for the stories kids love to live rich, full lives beyond the pages of the books. Eight years and three programs later we have served nearly 3,000 children with our unique brand of reading enrichment. Expanding the boundaries of the creative class is an important part of our mission and must include kids from the widest variety of families and circumstances. Our latest project, The Daedalus Initiative gifts students in Title 1 schools with science kits and other materials to further their knowledge and interest in STEM.
