Oh no, these were the Music Marvels of NJ, those who could play saxophone solos that made birds swoop in harmony and guitar riffs so catchy, even the grumpiest grouch would tap their feet. Leading this awesome band of musical maestros was the dashing and daring B-flat Benny. With a flash of his violin bow or a flick of his piano-key-flicking fingers, he could whip up a tune that would make even a statue groove. He was as famous in New Jersey as the Jersey Devil, but far less scary! Jersey was known for many things - its glorious beaches, the bustling boardwalks, the lush Pine Barrens, and of course, its legendary tomatoes. But, in Benny's eyes, nothing was as exciting as the sound of music echoing through the streets, from Cape May to High Point. No matter where you went in NJ, you could always hear the sweet melody in the air. Kids playing their harmonicas in Hackensack, trumpeting in Trenton, or belting out ballads in Bayonne. The Garden State was really the Groovin' State, all thanks to B-flat Benny and his band of musical mates. So, if you ever find yourself in New Jersey, listen closely. Essex Youth Theater offers a unique opportunity for children to express themselves through the performing arts. At the end of each semester, the students put together a full-scale musical production featuring their own work. Today, the YMCA of Montclair operates 3 branches— Park Street YMCA, Geyer Family YMCA, and Camp at the Lake YMCA—serving over 13,000 members. Membership is open to all, with financial assistance available to those who live in our service area (Bloomfield, Bloomingdale, Clifton, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Haskell, Montclair, Verona and West Milford) with demonstrated financial need.
