Andrea Herbert Major is a distinguished dancer, choreographer, and teacher who is highly regarded throughout Massachusetts. She started her dance training at the age of three under the instruction of Mildred Kennedy Bradic and later earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Boston Conservatory of Music. After completing her studies, she went on to the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York. When Andrea started teaching classes at the Roxbury YMCA, she realized that young inner-city children needed to be exposed to the performing arts. This inspired her to open Andrea’s School of Dance in 1967. Over time, the school grew from three to several hundred students, prompting the name change to The Roxbury Center for the Performing Arts in 1972. Today, Andrea continues to be a driving force of the performing arts in Massachusetts and strives to ensure the availability of this art form for all children, regardless of their background. Her work has been recognized by numerous awards and honors, and she is a true inspiration to many.

Parents looking for a fun and engaging activity for their little ones should try Capoeira classes. During classes, children will learn traditional sequences and modern progression while listening to traditional, sensational, and energetic music (featuring berimbau, atabaque and pandeiro). Classes begin with movement games to warm-up, preparing the children for training. Partner and line-work are taught, focusing on the move from one position to another and developing techniques. Finally, the class ends with traditional ‘Capoeira roda’, where children will have the opportunity to display creative and intuitive movements, build confidence, and practice playing Capoeira music.
