In the sun-kissed state of California, where palm trees sway to the beat of ocean waves and the mountains stand tall and mighty, there exists a special group of kids who are anything but ordinary. These are the 'Horseback Heroes', a troop of adventure-loving, horse-riding kids whose tales of fun and bravery would make even the mightiest cowboy tip his hat!

Leading this pack of cowkids is a hilarious character who goes by the name of 'Cowboy Cal'. Cal, with his freckled face, sun-bleached hair, and twinkling blue eyes, is as Californian as the golden sunshine itself. But don’t let his fluffy hair and shiny braces fool you - when he dons his cowboy hat and mounts his trusty steed, ‘Sir Neigh-a-lot’, he's as dashing and gallant as any hero from an old western movie.

Cowboy Cal and the rest of the Horseback Heroes spend their days galloping along the golden beaches, racing through the lush vineyards, and exploring the mighty Yosemite valleys. Every day is a wild, winding adventure. And just when you think they might be too tired to continue, they break out into laughter, make funny faces (that only a mother could love), and start a new journey anew. With their unwavering spirit, contagious laughter, and their loyal horses, these kids paint a picture of California that's as vibrant as a Hollywood movie and as warm as freshly baked apple pie. Rawhide Ranch is the perfect place for kids to have a wild and educational adventure. Campers can take part in activities such as horse-riding, animal care and stock-handling, allowing them to develop skills and learn about the responsibility of looking after animals. Not to mention, the camp’s Wild West theme will have kids feeling like they’re in an episode of Bonanza!

But the lessons learned at Rawhide go beyond skills – campers build character and learn the importance of integrity, respect, hard work and the value of community. By participating in a wide range of activities, campers learn firsthand the rewards of team-work and cooperation. 

At Rawhide Ranch, campers can make memories that will last a lifetime. Whether they’re in the saddle, up to their elbows in farm work, or enjoying campfire songs and stories, Rawhide is the perfect place for kids to have a wild, educational and character-building adventure!

Rawhide Ranch

Shawna DeGrange, or “Charm” as she is known on the ranch, has been a part of the Cloverleaf Camp team since 1999. Since 2003, Charm has been the Camp Director and is a third-generation owner/Director. Her educational background includes Early Childhood Development with minors in tennis, dance, and horse mastership. She is also certified as a rifle instructor and archery instructor, and heads up the American Camp Association’s Accreditation Team. In addition to her camp experience, Charm has also been employed by Southern California Girls, Inc., a program dedicated to assisting young women in achieving personal success.

Charm has also been committed to her local community. She has worked with organizations like local Rotary clubs, volunteered as a mentor in the “Girls on the Run” program, joined and supported BRONC (Barn and Ranch Owners of Norther California), and served as president of the Mark West Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, she established the non-profit Charm’s Place, which provides scholarships for camp to children in need. Her dedication to her local community was recognized in 2015 when she was awarded the Spirit of Sonoma Award.

Ron DeGrange has been involved in all aspects of the Cloverleaf camp since 1963. He holds a California Community College credential in physical education and horsemastership, and is in charge of the Food Service Program. Ginger DeGrange, Charm’s mother, also holds credentials as a French and English instructor and has been a Horse Science instructor since 1971 at Santa Rosa Junior College. A talented rider, Ginger has won many awards, including Grand National Rodeo Queen in 1963, Sonoma County Rodeo Queen in 1964, and California State Rodeo Princess in 1966.

Cloverleaf Ranch

Camp provides a safe and secure environment for children to learn, grow, and have fun. Campers and staff are empowered to become leaders, to develop spiritual and personal growth, and to build lasting friendships. We provide an opportunity for campers to learn to navigate life’s challenges and serve the broader community. We believe that each person can have a positive influence on our world and to that end, we use the example of a young seminarian named Michael. His example of reaching out to others, helping them, and using the gifts and talents God gave him serves as an inspiration for campers and staff alike. 

At camp, campers are surrounded by nature and taught to respect the environment. Through our Nature Program, campers learn the Leave-No-Trace wilderness ethic and the names of local trees and plants. We ask campers and staff to respect all life and avoid the unnecessary picking of leaves or killing of bugs. Campers are encouraged to take this "Michael-like" spirit home with them, helping to make our world more loving and life-giving.

Redwood Adventure Camp

Families have been exploring the outdoors since 1972 with the Woods family. Ann and Hobie Woods, joined by their daughter Amy, now have their grandson Cecilio as a third generation camper!

The Adventure Day Camp is a family-owned and operated business that has been in the Welch family since 2000. With over 35 years of camp experience, the Welch parents are hands-on with the day camp program. Kevin holds a B.A. in Business from Clark University and has been involved in summer camps since his childhood. His experiences from Agassiz Village, a sleep-away camp in Maine, have been a great asset to the day camp. Meanwhile, Sunshine holds a B.S. in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico and is certified in Recreational Therapy. She has extensive experience working with children and adults with special needs, including physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. 

With the Adventure Day Camp, families can feel secure knowing that the Welch parents have over 35 years of camp experience. Kevin Welch, with his B.A. in Business from Clark University and background with sleep-away camps, has a great knowledge of camp operations. Sunshine Welch brings her educational background with a B.S. in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico, as well as her certification in Recreational Therapy. She has a wealth of experience with special needs populations, including physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. 

The Adventure Day Camp is run by the Welch family since 2000, and Kevin and Sunshine Welch are heavily involved in the day camp program. Kevin holds a degree in Business from Clark University and Sunshine holds a degree in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico, and is certified in Recreational Therapy. With over 35 years of summer camp experience and their personal backgrounds, the Welch family are well-equipped to provide campers with a safe, enriching camp experience.

Tom Sawyer Camps has been a beloved tradition in the Pasadena area since 1926. Every summer, campers ages 3-14 from all over the area get to experience carefree outdoor activities in a rustic setting in the Hahamongna Watershed Park. The camp day is split between scheduled activities such as swimming, horseback riding, archery, and rock wall climbing, and free time where campers can explore and create in the wilderness. During free time, campers can build forts, create dams in the mud river, and complete imaginative challenges. All of these experiences provide campers with an opportunity to get back to nature, just like Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher did in the classic literature.
